The 2nd Biennial Conference for Sustainable Design and Solutions will be held at Harvey Mudd College on Friday, October 5th, 2018. It will be hosted by the Hixon Center for Sustainable Environmental Design.
The conference is intended to raise academic and personal awareness regarding environmental sustainability issues on local, regional and global scales. More specifically, the Conference is centered on design - focusing on the methods and processes we apply to create sustainable solutions. We must train individuals to carry a multidisciplinary knowledge of environmental issues, and to apply a transdisciplinary approach to finding and implementing sustainable designs and solutions. This requires us to embrace the fluid, creative and sometimes nebulous processes inherent in addressing environmental problems. In other words, how we achieve sustainable solutions is just as important as the solutions themselves. |
Themes and Topics
Science and Technology
Harvey Mudd College is a STEM-oriented liberal arts college. At this conference, attendees will contribute to discussions addressing issues in science and technology, as they relate to the environment and society at large. These include problems produced by current science and technology practices, as well as solutions that advances in these areas could provide. |
Policy, Markets, and the Humanities
Other schools of the Claremont Consortium, as well as local businesses and organizations, will have a range of expertise outside of the technical areas studied at Harvey Mudd College. We invite attendees to address: (1) environmental problems produced by current policy, market practices and ideology, and (2) new policy mechanisms, market-based solutions, and shifts in ideological thinking that can produce solutions to environmental problems. |
Sustainability in Higher Education
As one of the world's premier institutions, Harvey Mudd College established the Hixon Center for Sustainable Environmental Design to address, in part, how campus operations, life and ethos can shift to produce a more ethical and environmentally sustainable academic space. We believe that other institutions, groups and individuals have a lot to offer in the way of bringing about these changes. We invite attendees to share their problems, methods, approaches, and solutions to promote environmental sustainability on their campuses. |
